From Te Wai Ōrea to Te Tokaroa

October 5th, 2024

More than thirty people made up the group for the hikoi on 5 October.

Chris Severne showed the work of the Blue Greens by the NW motorway. Near Pasadena, Whitebait Connection explained the sensitivity of the young Galaxids to frequent overflows.

After just one major downpour the group walked on to Te Tokaroa Meola Reef. There Ben Goodwin pointed out both common and unusual plants in a 10,000 year old landscape.

Many thanks to Rhiannon, Ben, Chris, and Sel for their talks. Also Chris and Paul for organising the walk, and MP Helen White for joining us all to see nature in the city.

Special thanks to all the walkers who joined STEPS and Urban Ark on the journey from Maunga to Moana.

MAGS makes music on Roy Clements Treeway

October 4th, 2024

Around 30 walkers joined the STEPS hikoi down from Owairaka maunga on 28 October 2024. The walk was held for Auckland’s Heritage week.

Tupuna Maori Authority offered a karakia, and walkers looked out to see Waitītiko Meola Creek below.

A group descended via Toroa Terrace, and another via Vinter Ave. At Ahurangi the highest Central Interceptor shaft on Meola Creek was viewed.

Former MAGS teachers Roy Clements and Christine Hallet met with MAGS Headmaster Pat Drumm, then greeted the walkers on Kerr Taylor Reserve. They led the group towards musical performances on the Roy Clements Treeway played by six Senior music students, directed by Neil Watson.
