As a part of Conservation Week 2022, STEPS is following Waitītiko Meola Creek from Owairaka Mt Albert to Te Tokaroa Meola Reef over two successive weekends. We will follow the path of Waitītiko as closely as we can as we make our way to the sea.
Day 1, on Sunday the 4th Sept, starting at 1.00pm, is from the summit of Owairaka Mt Albert to Roy Clements Treeway. We will get as close as possible to the source of the stream, have a look at farsighted conservation efforts, fresh spring water and clear wetlands in the middle of Auckland. The walk is 3km long and will take about 2 hours.
Day 2, on Saturday the 10th Sept, starting at 1.00pm, is from Norgrove Ave, Mt Albert to Te Tokaroa Meola Reef. Once again we will get as close to Waitītiko as we can, have a look at conservation efforts made by community groups, schools and other organisations, see lava flow rock forest, and finally reach salt water marsh.
This is a free event but there is a limit of 25 attendees. Please register on eventfinda: Day 1 and Day 2.
There will be a car to shuttle you back to the beginning of the walk if required (mask mandatory).
In case of bad weather, cancellation on the day will be advised here and our facebook page @STEPSNZ.

STEPS was delighted to attend the Gala Premiere showing of “Waitītiko- From Source to Sea” – a short film by Carolyn Sylvester and Andy Farrant. The film focusses on communities along the awa/ creek – creatives, whanau, kura, aspects of te taiao/ environment & those who care for the wildlife on the creek.
The video is now live for you to play, download, share and send at: https://vimeo.com/721174156
We can also arrange further local showings of the film for members so please contact us if you are interested.
We thank Carolyn and her team for all their creativity and mahi. We also thank those who supported and became involved in this project. Big thanks to the Albert-Eden Local Board, Neighbourhood Arts, who funded it.
