End of planting session, Chamberlain Rock forest 1 July ’231 July ’23
On Saturday 1 July we had an enrichment planting. We selected a few key species of lava rock forest, and planted them in the shade of the dense privet canopy on Chamberlain Park lava flow. As these local plants grow up, exotic weedy privets can be slowly eradicated.
Thanks to Jen, Christina, Ben, Mary, Damien, Dan, Sel, Freddie, Trevor, Phil, Paul, Kim and Louise. Also Shalini, Richard, Watercare and Te Ngähere for their great support.
We planted 235 houpara/ pseudopanax, matipo/ myrsine, pigeon wood/ Hedycarya, puriri, kohekohe and karaka trees.
This day was showery, and there were muddy patches and pools of water on the green which caused the closure of the golf course.
STEPS has two rock forest plantings by Meola creek in July.
Update: A group of experienced planters is confirmed for today, 1 July.
For this first planting a reasonable fitness level is needed, along with some planting experience. Agility and balance will be needed to plant on a rocky slope.
We invite experienced planters to restore this native habitat on Meola Creek. However if you have any doubts about your health, safety, agility or other please do not come as the ground walking in and out will be very wet.
First Roy Clements Treeway in Mt Albert – meet at the sign for Kerr Taylor Park at the start of the Southern end of the Treeway on Wednesday evenings – 4pm while it is so dark – but 5 pm in summer. Please contact us via this site and you can join our Whatsapp group.
Next we have a group which meets near Meola Road on Mondays at 10 am. If you are available, please message us. There is a health and safety process to go through as the site is very steep suitable only for the agile.
